Method
Making the Cake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and mix until smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Decorating the Cake
- Once the cakes are completely cool, level the tops as needed.
- Frost the top of one cake layer with a layer of buttercream and place the second layer on top.
- Use the remaining buttercream to frost the sides and top of the cake.
- Color some of the buttercream with food coloring for decoration.
- Use piping bags to create borders, flowers, or any whimsical design.
- Finish with edible decorations like glitter or edible flowers.
