Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Use unbleached for consistent texture.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Use fresh for the best rise.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar Adds a touch of sweetness.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup buttermilk Full-fat for tang and tenderness.
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted Brown slightly for richer flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Make a well in the center and add the buttermilk and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it gently for a minute.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife to help it rise.
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Serve warm with salted butter and jam, or alongside soups and stews. This bread can also be frozen for later use.
