Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast Use fresh yeast that is within its expiration date.
  • 1 cup warm water (105–110°F / 40–43°C) Ensure the temperature is warm but not hot.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Can substitute with coconut sugar for lower sugar options.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted Use real unsalted butter for best flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Mix into liquids to avoid inhibiting yeast activity.
  • 3 to 4 cups all-purpose flour Use unbleached for reliable gluten strength.
  • 1 piece egg (optional, for wash) Use plant-based milk for a vegan option.

Method

Activation
  1. In a bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Wait until the mixture foams, indicating the yeast is alive.
Mixing
  1. Add melted butter and salt to the yeast mixture and stir until combined.
  2. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, stirring until a soft dough forms.
Kneading
  1. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First Rise
  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
Shaping
  1. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12–16 small balls.
  2. Place balls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise again for about 30 minutes.
Baking
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Optional: Brush tops with beaten egg for shine.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

For a soft finish, brush with melted butter immediately after baking. Variations include adding spices or herbs for flavor enhancements.
