- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups peeled and diced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (for caramel)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until fluffy. Mix in vanilla, then flour and salt until crumbly.
- Press two-thirds of the dough into the pan to form the crust. Bake for 15 minutes, then cool slightly.
- Toss diced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Set aside.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 1 cup sugar until golden. Stir in 6 tbsp butter, then slowly add cream. Remove from heat and stir in sea salt.
- Spread apple filling over crust. Drizzle half of the caramel over apples. Crumble remaining dough on top.
- Bake 25–30 minutes until golden and bubbly. Cool completely.
- Drizzle remaining caramel on top. Optionally, sprinkle with sea salt. Cut into bars and serve.
Notes
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week, or freeze for longer storage.
