French Onion Chicken Orzo Casserole

A comforting dish combining the rich flavors of French onion soup with tender chicken and orzo pasta, topped with creamy cheese.

  • 2 cups Chicken, cooked
  • 3 Garlic cloves
  • 1/2 tsp Thyme, dried
  • 2 Yellow onions, large
  • 2 cups Chicken broth, low-sodium
  • 1 1/2 cups Orzo pasta
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 2 tbsp Butter, unsalted
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cups Mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, and sugar; cook for another 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the cooked chicken, chicken broth, heavy cream, and orzo pasta. Mix well and bring to a simmer.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
  6. Top with mozzarella and parmesan cheese.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of white wine when cooking the onions. You can use rotisserie chicken for quick preparation. This dish can also be made vegetarian by omitting the chicken.
