Black Forest Trifle

A delightful dessert featuring layers of rich chocolate cake, sweet cherries, and whipped cream, perfect for Christmas gatherings.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix (or 1 homemade chocolate cake)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for whipping)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups canned or fresh cherries (pitted, with juice or syrup)
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice (from the canned cherries or fresh)
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings (or grated chocolate)
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Bake the chocolate cake according to the package instructions or your homemade recipe. Let it cool completely before cutting it into cubes.
  2. In a bowl, combine the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Use a mixer to whip the cream until soft peaks form.
  3. If using canned cherries, drain them and keep the juice. If using fresh cherries, wash and pit them. Set aside some cherries for garnish.
  4. In a large trifle dish or individual glasses, start layering: add a layer of chocolate cake cubes, then a layer of cherries, followed by a layer of vanilla pudding and whipped cream. Repeat until the dish is full, finishing with a layer of whipped cream.
  5. Cover the trifle and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2-4 hours or overnight.
  6. When ready to serve, sprinkle cocoa powder on top and garnish with chocolate shavings and cherries.

Notes

Prepare the trifle a day in advance for enhanced flavor as the layers meld together overnight. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
